  • Living Room / Dining Room: Tour of the Rooms and Tips
  • From "DIY Lighting Design"
    episode DLTD-101

Go on a tour of the newly lighted living and dinging rooms in this final segment.

    Living Room

    • With a little wiring and a new recessed light, this once poorly-lit fireplace is now a beacon of interest once you walk in the room (figure A).

    • The thick, dark bookshelf was lightened with glass and rope lighting, and the tall lamp beside the chair was replaced with a reading lamp. This area (figure B) is much more charming and inviting now.

    • A new, lighter rug was added to the room to lighten things up as well.

    • And topping off the room is the new conversation area (figure C), with a love seat, new end tables and the two lamps that resided in the dining room before.

      Dining Room

    • The walls were re-painted, making them a few shades lighter, and notice how the new ceiling-fixture globes (now opaque) lighten up the room (figure D).

    • The side table now has the newly-purchased lamps, and the painting on the wall was highlighted with an easy-to-install battery-operated light.

    • The China cabinet, which houses some beautiful, sparkling pieces, is now highlighted with rope lighting inside the cabinet and candles on top (figure E).

    • And the most dramatic touch is the new larger plant in the corner, highlighted from below with a spike light. Notice the shadow that's cast on the wall and ceiling (figure F)!

    Lighting Tips:

    • Obviously, but very importantly, safety always comes first. Turn the appropriate breakers off before you begin any lighting project.

    • Choose a focal point in your room and highlight with the right light.

    • Lighting should illuminate, not eliminate! In other words, choose lighting at accents your room, not covers it up.

    • And remember, electricity isn't your only light source. Paint, candles and even rugs can also help give a room the right light.
