Cleaning and customizing your kitchen island (figure A) is a good weekend project.

    • You’ll want to start by removing knobs and hinges from the cabinet doors.

    • For removing any old food splatters or grease buildup, a solution of heavy duty cleansers with warm water works well.

    • If you plan on salvaging old hardware, clean and polish it.

    • Before you settle on any new hardware, make sure it will sit the existing holes (figure B).

    • You can customize the island by painting it, adding wood appliqués to the doors or it yo have access to a carving machine you can create decorative designs.

    • The machine translates an image that’s been scanned and then carves the design (figure C) into the cabinets doors.

    • To make the new design stand out, consider using an artist’s paint brush to apply a darker stain on the carving.

    • Finally, those shiny knobs and hinges are ready to be attached, making your island the center of attention.

    • If you’re sanding or painting the doors, don’t sand off or paint over the marks needed to put the cabinet doors in the right place.

    • Make sure the new hardware pieces fit your existing cabinet doors.

    • You can dress up cabinets with the addition of molding.

    • You can also strip and refinish cabinets. Determine the type of finish on the cabinets to find the proper stripper.
