    Topics covered on today's episode:

Installing wood banisters and rails to a staircase

Removing factory markings from wood stairs to leave them natural

Adding pull-down stairs to access an attic

Installing a banister for basement steps

Replacing or repairing a stair tread with a split in it

    Repairing wallpaper

    Removing tape residue

    Resticking linoleum

Repairing wooden porch pillars that are coming unglued

Adding firring strips to cinderblock walls

    Repairing or replacing spring-loaded hinges

    Tips:

    • Remove one leg of a clothespin and replace it with a carpenter's pencil. The pencil will stay wherever you put it.

    • A magnet attached to your toolbelt can help you keep track of small parts when you're on the move.

    • Tape the edge of a piece of newspaper to the floor in your shop and sweep dirt and sawdust onto it. When your floor is clean, wad up the paper and throw away the whole thing.

    • Before you throw out a dried-up roll of tape, try to bring it back by putting it in the microwave on high for one minute.

    • Squeezing out resin and hardener in parallel lines of equal width and length will help you accurately judge the correct mixture for a strong epoxy bond.
