  • Landscaping, Cleaning and Curb Appeal
  • From "Talk2DIY Home Improvement"
    episode TTD-264F
    advertisement

    Topics covered on today's episode:

    Growing grass for next season

Seeing fall colors on the West Coast

    Planting around camellias and azaleas

Keeping a blue hydrangea from turning pink

    Cleaning a roof

    Cleaning nicotine off paneling

    Cleaning refrigerator coils

    What home inspectors look for

    Cleaning screens

    Cleaning black mold off brick

    Winterizing a pool

    Tips:

    • An egg carton can help you safely keep tender bulbs inside over winter. Label the lid to help identify various varieties.

    • Two 2-by-4s screwed to either side of a stud in your workshop will make convenient storage for long-handled yard tools.

    • Covering the bottom of your oven with aluminum foil to catch drips may save time when cleaning your oven, but it also reflects heat and may cause the bake element to burn out prematurely.

    • Keep your old mouse pad in the kitchen or a workshop drawer. The rubber backing grips stubborn lids so you can loosen them.

    • To remove gray residue and mildew on exterior wood, add 1 quart of household bleach and 1 ounce of nonammoniated detergent to 1 gallon of water; work it in with a brush, then rinse.

    • Wrap a lamppost with chicken wire and plant a climbing annual such as morning glory or hyacinth bean vine at its base. By August it will have reached the top and be in full flower.
