  • Remodeling and Carpentry
  • From "Talk2DIY Home Improvement"
    episode TTD-241F
    advertisement

    Topics covered on today's episode:

Finding a contractor for a garage renovation

    Installing a new garden tub

Taking out a wall (electrical and structural issues)

    Kitchen-remodeling software

Getting rid of sagging basement floors and prepping to install new ones

Building a custom corner computer desk

Making grooves to install new drawers in an existing cabinet

Installing and leveling a free-hanging countertop

Uses for different types of molding

    Installing concealed hinges

    Testing paint for lead

Turning a barn into an observatory

    Tips:

    • Keep an idea file of images from magazines, floor plans, color and fabric samples and anything else you like. It will help you guide your remodeling project as well as relate your ideas to others.

    • When remodeling your kitchen, remember that old kitchen cabinets and countertops can make great storage and work areas in your basement or garage.

    • To keep lag screws from splitting your wood, first drill a full-depth pilot hole at least one-half the diameter of the screw's threads.

    • A simple knot will keep your power tool and its extension cord attached.

    • You can paint your house -- but you should never paint a wooden ladder. The paint could hide dangerous cracks or splits in the wood. To preserve it, use a coat of linseed oil instead.
