Even functional bathroom items such as towel bars can be attractive. Try some of DIY Decorating & Design host Nancy Golden's creative ideas for banishing dreary everyday towel bars and hooks.

What kid wouldn't hang up his towel when the towel rack and hook are actually a baseball bat and ball? Mount a ball and bat on banister brackets for neat hang-ups (figure A).

Check out the drapery department of your favorite store for creative towel-bar ideas. Try space-saving French drapery rods that tuck towels out of the way on hinged arms (figure B), or consider curtain tie-backs as unusual towel hooks (figure C).

A wooden bathroom fixture that combines a shelf, drawers, a towel bar and a peg rack is a perfect combination of good looks and function (figure D).

Use a metal planter to hold bathroom supplies, or a wine rack as a fancy countertop towel rack (figure E).
